Gene Carangal

  Gene is a project manager with 15+ years of experience managing healthcare technology and software development project portfolios. He began his professional career as an applications programmer for marketing research company Information Resources, Inc  after graduating with a Math and Computer Science degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. His role eventually evolved into managing a team of software developers for projects utilizing mainframe, Unix, and desktop applications. In 2002, Gene's career changed drastically when he and his wife opened a pediatric clinic in McAllen, Texas. He served as the practice administrator, where he developed procedures to ensure HIPAA and OSHA compliance. Gene was also in charge of the effort to convert the paper medical chart system into a state of the art Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system.

In 2013, Gene decided to switch back to software development by working at two software startup companies offering medical SaaS (Software as a service) solutions. He coached software development teams in Agile software principles, test-driven development and continuous integration. Gene also served as the project manager for a successful Cloud-to-Cloud integration effort with athenahealth, Inc - a leading provider of electronic medical record software.  He now works at USAA as a digital product owner of 2 enterprise software applications developed internally.

Gene is also a real estate investor with a portfolio of residential and commercial properties in the Rio Grande Valley. He formed Laguna Property Management, LLC based in San Antonio. He oversees all management operations and client communication when he is not at his day job.


In this free time, he enjoys traveling with May - his lovely bride of 25 years. Gene is also the event promoter for the Adobo Throwdown Cooking Competition and Food Expo. This event will showcase the colorful culture of the Philippines through its food, music and dance.
