Celebrating Filipino American History Month in San Antonio with Mayor Ron Nirenberg's Proclamation

Introduction:

Filipino American History Month is a time to celebrate the rich history and contributions of Filipino Americans to our society. This October, the City of San Antonio, Texas, is joining hands with our sister city of Baguio to commemorate this significant occasion. We are honored to share with you the official proclamation from Mayor Ron Nirenberg, highlighting the importance of this month and recognizing the remarkable achievements of Filipino Americans throughout history.

Proclamation Highlights:

A Rich Heritage:

Mayor Nirenberg's proclamation reminds us that Filipino Americans make up one of the largest Asian American ethnic groups in the United States today. It also takes us back to the 16th century when Filipinos first arrived at Morro Bay, California, long before the founding of our nation in 1776.

Honoring Sacrifices:

In October, we pay tribute to the more than 260,000 Filipino and Filipino Americans who courageously served under the American flag during World War II. Today, over 25,000 Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders continue this legacy by proudly serving in our armed forces.

The 2023 Theme:

This year's theme, "1898: Recognizing 125 Years of Philippine-American History," acknowledges the significance of the Treaty of Paris, signed by Spain and the United States. This treaty led to the annexation of the Philippines by the United States and provided a pathway to America for Filipino nationals.

Trailblazers and Leaders:

The proclamation also celebrates the achievements of trailblazing Filipino Americans, such as civil rights leader Larry Itliong. For over two decades, Itliong fought tirelessly for those without a voice, playing a pivotal role in advancing farmworkers' rights and social justice for the Filipino farm labor movement. He co-founded the United Farm Workers Union and left an indelible mark on history.

Local Contributions:

Mayor Nirenberg acknowledges the local impact of Filipino Americans, including the establishment of youth groups like the Brandeis High School Barkadas Filipino Club and the creation of the San Antonio chapter of the Filipino American National Historical Society.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, Mayor Ron Nirenberg's proclamation marks October 2023 as "Filipino American History Month" in San Antonio, Texas. It serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage and the significant contributions of Filipino Americans that have paved the way for future generations.

We invite you to join us in celebrating this important month and stay tuned for exciting events and activities planned throughout October. Let's come together to honor Filipino American history and culture, showcasing the diverse tapestry that makes up our great nation. #FilAmHistoryMonth #SanAntonioCelebrates

A Tribute to Dr Carey Latimore IV

Photo of Dr. Carey Latimore IV with wife Almie and friend Yoly Moy

By: Yoly Moy

♥️ August 2, 2022: Attended a celebration of life memorial for a PACC-CTR colleague and good friend, Dr Carey Latimore IV. His wife Almie (Pacheco) is a WarayWaray. Very nice couple and good friends of mine here in San Antonio and the Chamber.

Really anguished with his passing, as we are busy planning for a huge event on October 21st, for PACC-CTR’s 2nd TOFSA Gala and Baguio City and San Antonio Friendship City MOU Signing.

Dr. Carey appointed me as the TOFSA Chair. He was the Chairman for Programs of PACC-CTR. We were just having a committee meeting the day before he passed. He was only 46. He was an icon here in San Antonio, a civic and community leader.

The memorial yesterday was well attended with Mayor Ron Nirenberg present. He’s a very good friend of the couple too.
His remains is being flown today to Virginia where he will be laid to rest next to his Mom on Friday, August 5th.
This past week was really devastating for me. Attended to Almie right away after he passed… on her side all this time. I’m very close to them… very good friends at that. He will truly be missed!

May Carey’s soul Rest In Peace. Amen. 🙏
(The Outstanding Filipino-Americans of San Antonio) ♥️

Dr. Danet Bluhm Recognized as one of South Texas Nurse Imagemakers by the Sigma Delta Alpha-at-Large and Texas Nurses Association District 8

Maria Danet (“DANET”) Lapiz Bluhm PhD, RN, MSCI, FAAN Board Member - PACC-CTR

Make it stand out

PACC-CTR’s very own Dr. Danet Bluhm has been recognized as one of South Texas Nurse Imagemakers by the Sigma Delta Alpha-at-Large and Texas Nurses Association District 8 during the 15th Annual South Texas Nurse Imagemakers Celebration,  a virtual program held last May 12, 2022, along with two great Filipino nurses from Philippine Nurses Association of San Antonio, Golda Manalili and Albert Tarriela.

The Sigma Delta Alpha-at-Large and Texas Nurses Association District 8 recognizes Dr. Bluhm’s important contribution in the field of nursing as the founding adviser of the International Nursing Student Association (INSA) of the University of Texas, San Antonio. In addition to this, she is also a tenured faculty and director of the International Program of the School of Nursing. Since founding INSA in 2009, she has provided students with community service learning, opportunities to provide care to vulnerable populations to date about 3,000 through diabetic and cardiovascular health screening, and health literacy promotion.

Dr. Bluhm’s inspiring character shone brightest during the pandemic when she led students to provide covid-19 vaccines to minority communities, especially those with access issues. Continuing her great service, she also mentored minority student leaders for funding applications to support CLS activities with a hundred percent funding success. This experience provided students with strong communications, leadership, and research background contributing to their decision to undertake graduate education.

In all of her activities, Dr. Bluhm was always a professional where she exhibited her communication skills, respect, influence, courage, empathy, and gratitude. PACC-CTR can never be more blessed to have a Board Member/Imagemaker in the organisation and ever proud with this prestigious achievement.

USS TELESFORO TRINIDAD CAMPAIGN

USS TELESFORO TRINIDAD CAMPAIGN (USSTTC)

“Ship and Shipmate Before Self”

MISSION:   Name a US Navy Warship (Destroyer--DDG or Frigate--FFG) after Fireman Second Class Telesforo Trinidad, an American national of Filipino descent who received the Medal of Honor on April 1, 1915, for extraordinary heroism and intrepidity in the line of his profession to memorialize his heroic contributions to the U.S. Navy and our grateful Nation.

VISION:   Perpetuate PO2 Trinidad’s heroic contributions to promote national awareness and education   and bring pride and honor to the US Navy, its Sailors – officer and enlisted, their families and our Republic.

WHO WE ARE:  USSTTC is a national grass roots advocacy group comprised of serving and retired members of the US Armed Forces, community leaders, academics, corporate executives, civic leaders, partners and sponsors, and veterans’ families committed to naming a US Navy Warship after Trinidad. (A 501(c)(3) application is in progress).

BACKGROUND:  No US Navy ship has been named after a member of the US Armed Forces of Filipino descent, even though tens of thousands of Filipinos have served faithfully in the US Navy beginning in 1901 when President William McKinley signed an Executive Order allowing the Navy to enlist 500 Filipinos as part of the Insular Force.  Approximately 6,000 Filipinos enlisted in the US Navy during WWI and many more joined through the interwar period leading up to WWII.  After the Philippines obtained its independence from the United States in 1946, over 35,000 Filipinos were recruited into the US Navy from 1952 to 1992 under a provision of the Republic of the Philippines- United States Military Bases Agreement. In addition, thousands of Americans of Filipino descent enlisted during this same 40-year period, and continue to do so until today.

DISCUSSION:  Trinidad remains the first and only American of Asian descent and first American national of Filipino descent in the US Navy to receive a Medal of Honor for his extraordinary heroism in the line of his profession during boiler explosions onboard the USS San Diego (ACR-6) while the ship was underway in the Gulf of California on January 21, 1915.  Trinidad brought two crewmembers to safety in spite of his own physical injuries from the explosion.  He was awarded the Medal of Honor in accordance with General Order Number 142 signed by the Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels on  April 1, 1915.

To date, there is only one ship, the USS Chung-Hoon (DDG-93) named after an Asian American in the Navy - Rear Admiral Gordon Pai’ea Chung-Hoon, Commanding Officer of USS Sigsbee (DD-502) during World War II, who received the Navy Cross for his gallant actions during a kamikaze attack on April 14, 1945.

RECOMMENDATION:  Name a US Navy Warship-- Destroyer or Frigate--after PO2 Telesforo Trinidad, which follows in the proud tradition of the US Navy in naming a ship after a Medal of Honor Recipient.
