Celebrating Forgotten Filipino Leaders: The Delano Manongs

Join us for a monumental community event as we mark our debut as a chapter of the Filipino American Historical Society! In collaboration with AAPIS for Justice, we proudly present an enlightening film screening showcasing forgotten Filipino American civil rights leaders, followed by an open community discussion led by acclaimed filmmaker Emilio J. Virata, Jr.

Our featured films include:

"The Delano Manongs: Forgotten Heroes of the United Farm Workers" (Marissa Aroy, 2014)

"Profits Enslave the World: A Song Across Generations" (Emilio J. Virata Jr., 2023)

"Claiming Space: 'Gintong Kasaysayan, Gintong Pamana' LA's Historic Filipinotown Mural" (Emilio J. Virata Jr., 2022)

These films bring to light the extraordinary contributions of Delano Manongs Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz, who played pivotal roles in initiating the historic Delano Grape Strike and co-founding the United Farm Workers union. Despite their significant impact on civil rights, their stories have often been overshadowed or omitted from mainstream narratives about the farmworkers' movement and the history of the United Farm Workers union. Join us as we rectify this historical oversight.

In addition, we'll explore a third film that delves into the process of claiming space to represent our rich Filipino American history. This film features prominent figures, including Eliseo Art Silva, Joel Jacinto, Myra Dumapias, Edgar Dormitorio, Mel Ilomin, Mark Pulido, Carol Ojeda-Kimbrough, Nichole Dungo, Erin Manalo-Pedro, Mike Manalo-Pedro, and Chamina Dormitorio.

The unity exhibited by Filipino farmworkers during the Delano Grape Strike underscored the transformative power of solidarity, resulting in essential worker protections, improved conditions, higher wages, access to healthcare, and the prohibition of harmful pesticides. This strike's legacy laid the foundation for subsequent victories and labor organizing, underscoring the pivotal roles played by Filipino and Japanese farmworkers during this crucial period in history.

Don't miss the interactive community discussion following the films, where we'll have the opportunity to reflect, share insights, and forge a deeper understanding of the profound impact these leaders have had on our community and the labor movement. Together, we'll commemorate their enduring legacy and the ongoing pursuit of justice.
